Wingdings Alphabet and Symbol Chart

The Wingdings alphabet maps each keyboard key to a picture symbol. Pressing A in the Wingdings font produces a victory hand, B produces an OK hand sign, and C produces a thumbs up, on through all 26 letters plus numbers and punctuation. The chart below pairs every character with its standard Unicode equivalent.

Click Copy on any row to put that symbol on your clipboard. It pastes into Word, Docs, a message or a bio.

Running a whole sentence instead? The home page translator handles both directions, and the font's backstory explains why these symbols exist at all.

The letters of the word ALPHABET, each above the Wingdings symbol that letter produces.
Each key draws its own symbol. The full tables are below, key by key.

All 52 letter keys, uppercase first. Capitals and lowercase draw completely different symbols, so case matters when you copy.

Uppercase runs through hands, office icons and religious symbols. Lowercase a to i gives the zodiac signs from Cancer to Pisces.

Wingdings numbers: 0 to 9

The ten digit keys draw file and office icons rather than counted numbers. If you wanted numbers in circles, those live in Wingdings 2.

Find a Wingdings symbol by name

Have the symbol but not its name? Type what it looks like and the list narrows as you go.

Search matches the symbol name, the key that draws it, the symbol itself if you paste one in, or its Unicode value.

Every result carries the codes you need to use it: Unicode, the HTML entity and the CSS escape. The tables above make each one click-to-copy.

Three that get looked up constantly: the black medium square sits on n, the waving white flag on O, the X in a box on x.

216 of 216 symbols

Unicode equivalents you can paste anywhere

Every symbol in the Unicode column is a standard character, not a Wingdings one. Unicode 7.0 approved these codepoints in June 2014, drawing on Microsoft's own sets, so they render on Windows, Mac, Android, Linux and ChromeOS with no font installed. Copy one and it survives the paste.

That is the whole trick behind pasting these into a document that has never heard of Wingdings.

Google Docs is the clearest case, since its font menu carries no Wingdings at all.

The U+ codes in the last column are those same characters written as codepoints, which is what you need in CSS or a code editor.

Charts for Wingdings 2, 3 and Webdings

Wingdings 2, Wingdings 3 and Webdings each carry their own character map, so nothing on this page applies to them.

Wingdings 3 is nearly all arrows, and Webdings leans on web and media icons. Each has its own chart:

Wingdings chart FAQ

How many characters are in the Wingdings font?

The Wingdings font contains 223 characters across the typeable range. This chart lists 216 of them, covering every key you can actually press: all 52 letters, ten digits and the punctuation set. The Windows logo is the one glyph with no Unicode equivalent.

Why do Wingdings symbols show as empty squares?

Wingdings symbols show as empty squares when the device has no Wingdings font installed, because the font stores its glyphs in the Unicode Private Use Area. The Unicode column in every chart above avoids this entirely, since those characters display everywhere without the font.

Can I use Wingdings symbols on a website?

Using Wingdings symbols on a website is not reliable, because visitors without the font see empty boxes and the font is not licensed for web embedding. Copy the standard Unicode character from this chart instead, which renders on every browser and device.

Is the Wingdings 2 alphabet the same as Wingdings?

The Wingdings 2 alphabet is not the same as Wingdings. Each font carries its own character map, so pressing A gives a victory hand in Wingdings but a sideways pointing hand in Wingdings 2. Check the Wingdings 2 chart when your symbols look unfamiliar.
